Tourist Boom in Kashmir’s Border Areas Brings Plastic Pollution Concerns to the Forefront

Over the past two years, regions such as Keran, Bangus, Tangdhar, Gurez, and Uri along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir have witnessed a remarkable surge in tourist activity. This uptick in tourism can be attributed to the February 2021 ceasefire agreement between the Indian and Pakistani armies, which opened up these areas for visitors. However, with this influx of tourists comes a concerning rise in plastic pollution.
Local officials and environmentalists are sounding the alarm about the mounting plastic waste generated by tourists in these once-restricted zones. The escalating use of plastic bottles and wrappers and the increased presence of tourist vehicles are causing not only environmental pollution but also posing a significant threat to the local wildlife.
One local resident lamented that tourists have been using these picturesque areas as dumping sites, leaving behind their plastic waste without any regard for its impact on the environment. This accumulation of plastic waste not only mars the natural beauty that draws tourists but also endangers the livelihoods of the local population, who depend on tourism for their income.
Authorities stress the urgent need to educate both tourists and locals about the importance of curbing plastic usage and ensuring proper waste disposal. The tourism industry plays a pivotal role in the region’s economy, and it is crucial to preserve the natural beauty that attracts visitors.

Promoting responsible behavior among tourists is essential to combat this plastic pollution crisis. - Community Initiatives: Local communities are taking matters into their own hands by instituting bans on plastic bag usage in certain villages.
- Eco-Tourism Practices: Eco-tourism companies are offering sustainable tours that promote practices like using reusable water bottles and eco-friendly lunch containers.
These initiatives are undeniably making a positive impact, yet more concerted efforts are needed to effectively combat plastic pollution. Regular cleanups, stringent enforcement of anti-littering laws, support for eco-friendly businesses, and investment in innovative technologies to mitigate plastic pollution are all steps that can further contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Kashmir’s border areas.
